  1. yes you can use any combination in this chain - hdmi and hdmi, hdmi and component, component and hdmi, or component and component.  You are probably better off using both cables of the same type.  This way the reciever doesn't have to convert the signal to a different type of form.  Component to component will actually most likely give you a better picture than an hdmi component combination.

  2. Your question is still somewhat unclear.

That said, Component will probably allow a 1080i connection for video now, but in the future (uncertain when) HDCP on TV or the implementation of the Image Constraint Token on Blu-ray disks will result in video on component cables (technically any analog connection) being downconverted to sub HD resolution (540 or less). HDMI -- assuming connection to HDCP complaint devices at each end -- will then be the only way to get an HD signal.

Other than this limitation on component for HD (a potential deal killer in my mind) if the question was whether you can run component and HDMI simultaneously, the answer is probably yes, but you would have to check the manual for your equipment. Many receivers allow more than one video or audio connection to be live simultaneously (although sometimes interconnection from one format to another (e.g. S-video to component) is not supported ... which, if it is true for HDMI and component, could be the issue for you). At the least you will probably have to make sure the menu settings are set up right. I'd suggest a careful reading of the fine print in the manual.
