Question:

Connection Speed Issues on Router?

Hello, I have a 2wire modem that I got from ATT, and it is directly connected to my desktop via cable. The modem also sends wireless internet to my laptop, which runs upstairs. Problem is, that since I began using my laptop wirelessly, my internet download speed has been halved. First thing I thought was that because the internet connection is being used by two machines, the modem equally distributes half of a connection to each. Well no. I turned the laptop off (shut it down), but for some reason my connection on my desktop (now the only computer connected through my router) still only gets half of its original speed.

Thus, I am paying for 1.5mb/s, but I am getting only 0.7mb/s. Please help.

  1. Sounds like an issue with AT&T. Sometimes in heavily populated areas or areas in which ATT is dominant, you have many users connecting through one main connection which can degrade performance. You could also look at your NIC on both of your pc's, and make sure that the NIC's speed and duplex settings are set to Auto. The best advice would be to call ATT and see if there is an issue with their DSL lines between your home and the Demarc.
