Connection problem. i have connected my mp4 to my computer and it says connect on the mp4 screen

i have connected my mp4 to my computer and it says connect on the mp4 screen but there's no way i can connect it and also everytime i take the mp4 off the computer it turns off therefore there is no way for me to use it...can you help?
