Question:

Connection problems--will a second router help?

My husband works from home and uses a laptop provided by the company. He has been using our wireless connection (we have a cable modem and a router) which has worked fairly well. We also have three other computers for the family which are working off the same router and modem. Now I have started working from home (for the same company) as well, and we are starting to have more connectivity issues. It seems that if anyone in the household turns their computer on or off, whoever is currently online loses their connection. This is making it very hard for us to work. We are wondering if it would be better to somehow have the two work laptops use a completely different wireless connection, but are not sure how this would work. Would we need a new modem and router attached to one of the work laptops? Is this possible? Thanks for any advice!

  1. 1. is it possible to upgrade the current wireless router

    2. is it possible to use a wired connection to one of the computers?

    3. is there any type of security which can be disabled from the router? usually you can look into this by typing in the default gateway's name ex. http://192.168.15.1

  2. You need to configure your router. Remember you are also sharing the wireless bandwidth. So the more computers you add the slower it will get. Try wiring some of the computers. If they are desktops its silly to go wireless. Wire them mothers.
