Connections by intranet extranet?

can i connect 2 different places by intranet or extranet thus share the information and update on regular basis ...such that both the branches of my company has the access to information and can edit and all....basically streamlining the business via intranet or extranet rather than installing s/w or servers...if the above is possible please guide me how?
