Conner McHugh clinches Men’s 200m breaststroke gold: Day three – YMCA National Championship
Conner McHugh of Door County-WI clinched gold medal of the Men’s 200m breaststroke on day three of the 2012 YMCA National Long Course Championship at Georgia Institute of Technology Aquatics Center on Wednesday, July 25.
The 16-year-old McHugh stifled hopes of his opponents in the four-lap breaststroke discipline as he remained dominant throughout the discipline and ensured his place on top of the victory stand for gold medal.
With his astounding pace, he remained full body length ahead of his closest challenger and tapped the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 21.97 seconds.
His gold claiming effort remained 0.90 seconds ahead of Jonathan Rutter of Powel Crosley-OH, who proved his mettle for silver medal of the discipline by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 22.87 seconds.
The second position holder was followed by John Santoro of New Canaan-CT, who stayed 0.35 seconds apart and stepped on the victory stand for bronze medal by producing an effort of 2 minutes and 23.22 seconds.
Santoro was chased by Alex Keller of Fayette-IL, who was 0.99 seconds away from his preceding swimmer and touched the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 24.21 seconds for bronze medal.
Fifth position of the discipline was secured by Alex Jahan of Greenwich-CT, who stayed just 0.09 seconds slower and transpired on the finishing blockade with an effort of 2 minutes and 24.30 seconds.
The 14-year-old Jahan was traced by Jacob Limaldi of Ocean County-NJ, who was only half a second behind and hit the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 24.80 seconds for sixth position.
Seventh position of the discipline was secured by Victor Luo of Somerset Valley NJ, who stayed two body lengths behind and clocked a timing of 2 minutes and 26.26 seconds.
Luo was trailed by Zachary Mabin of Hamilton Area-NJ, who was only 0.08 seconds apart and ended his swim in eighth best place by submitting a time of 2 minutes and 26.34 seconds.
Furthermore, McHugh expressed contentment over his achievement in the 200m discipline and said that he would try to continue the same at future events.
