Connor Wickham prepared to wait for first-team opportunity at Sunderland
Connor Wickham, the 18-year-old Sunderland striker, said he was looking forward to a chance to prove what he was capable of after moving to the English Premier League from Championship side Ipswich Town in the summer transfer window.
The Black Cats paid an initial fee of £8.1 million to secure his services from the Championship side, which could rise to £12 million depending on his performance for the top flight club. Sunderland beat a host of Premier League sides to secure Wickham’s
signature, but the youngster has not yet managed to establish himself as a first team player.
So far Wickham has made just five appearances for Sunderland, all of them as a substitute. The Sunderland manager Steve Bruce made it clear he did not want the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 under-21 international to take it slow in the Premier League. The youngster has remained
patient, but admitted it was frustrating not getting a chance to prove himself.
Wickham said in an interview:
“Obviously, it's been quite frustrating. I just want to play football and when we are not doing so well, I feel and want to go on and show everyone what I can do and what I am capable of doing.
But I have just got to do the best I can every time I get on to the pitch. I have got to do enough in those 15, 20, 35 minutes that I am capable of doing what I have done before.”
However, Wickham felt he could benefit from the substitute appearances even though they were mostly towards the end of the game. He said he was taking each game as it came along and do his best in hopes of building his confidence. The youngster felt confidence
was essential for a footballer, especially a striker, and it was for this reason he wanted to get in as much first team football as he could to prepare him for the future where he would be playing regular football.
He continued:
“Every day and in every game, you need to do your best and when you do your best, it builds your confidence.
Confidence is key to any footballer and I have got confidence at the moment, so I just want to be playing football.”
