Where I live there is a lot of rain, a lot of ground water, many bodies of water. If I conserve water, will it help the rest of the country ?

  1. There are benifits of conserving water no matter where you live. Clean drinking water from the faucet has been processed and transported from its source at some cost in energy and materials. Wasting that water means wasting that energy.

Second, do not store more water than you need to. Water stored is water removed from the weather system. This may sound silly to think that your bottle of water is hurting the weather system but there are billions of gallons of water in bottles in the US alone. Consider also the water stored in tiolet tanks, pipes in homes and buildings, indoor pools ... it gets rediculous to consider.

If less water is in circulation then less water is available for precipitation. Water simply dumped on the ground can evaporate and be transported thousands of miles via winds to deliver rain where it may be much more needed than where you are.

As an example consider the city of Las Vegas. It is in a desert. That land should only hold a few hundred gallons at any given time. How much water is there now. Trillion gallons? And why are the snows in the Sierra Navada mtns not deep enough?

  2. Only if you live on or near a feed tributary

    .. .. ..

Or near by a large lake that is a feed for others

    .. .. ..

But if you live in a place where the rains are a normal then NO nothing you do will save any for anyone else

    .. .. ..

  3. Conserving water no matter where in the world you are is a good idea. Someone always lives downstream of you. We have limited supplies of drinkable water on the planet, and unless you are on well water, it takes a lot of resources to process the water and pipe it to your location.

Having lived through a severe drought in CA almost 30 years ago and being faced by another drought of the same magnatude. I encourage everyone to get used to using less before it is required.
