a) what mass of carbon dioxide can 1.00 kg of lithium hydroxide absorb?

b) what mass of lithium carbonate, LI2CO3, is produced?

c) Explain why this reaction limits the amount of time that astronauts can spend in space.

Help? Please? lol

Thanks =)

  1. a) You need 2 mols LiOH to absorb 1 mol CO2. So:

    n(LIOH)/2 = n(CO2)/1

    => m(LiOH)/M(LiOH)=2 m(CO2)/M(CO2)

    M: mola masses; m: mass

    m(CO2)=(1/2)m(LiOH)*M(CO2)/M(LiOH)

    = 1 kg* 44/2*24= 0.916 Kg

    b) n(LIOH)/2=n(LiCO3)

    => m)LiOH)/ 2 M(LiOH)=m(Li2CO3)/M(Li2CO3)

    => m(LiCO3)= 1000g* 74g/mol/ 2*24g/mol= 1541 g

    c) CO2 become toxic if the air concentration raises Unconsciousnessnsness) and lethal if air concentration is around 30 %.

    That means that very soon a space ship gets out of contro if there is no CO2 removal.Same problem with subs.
