  1. ABEC ratings have almost nothing to do with quality of bearings for inline skating.  The difference between ABEC 3 and ABEC 7 would be the absolute last thing I would consider.  The quality of the wheels (which you cannot tell or have a choice of on new skates) is much more important than the bearings.

Don't get the cheap skates from the discount stores.  They tend to be really poor.

The two major brands of quality skates in the US are K2 and Rollerblade.  Even their cheaper skates are decent.

Expect to spend $100 or more.  (custom racing skates can go for $2000)

Top thing is how they fit.  If your feet move around in them, you can't skate well.  They should be snug all around your feet without crushing your toes.

Larger wheels are better.  I wouldn't consider any skate with less than 80mm wheels.  At 80mm, you have a lot of choices in new wheels that will be much better than the ones they replace (I get mine from www.rollerbob.com).  Depending on your ankle strength and balance skills, 90mm might be reasonable or too large for a beginner.

Aluminum frames (the part that holds the wheels) are better than plastic (regardless of what they call it) and single piece (extruded) frames are better than ones held together by rivets.

Longer frames are better than short.

    Lighter weight

  2. ABEC is important as well as foot comfort and ease of getting into the boots. dont buy cheapies cause they wont roll well and you wont have any fun.
