  1. basically, unless you're allergic, your body can consume a certain amount before it actually reacts to it. I recently read up on this and the only source I have remaining is wikipedia (i had others) but I'm sure there will be some more available on there.

  2. Don't use anything with aspartame.  After long time use you will have serious health problems.

Splenda = aspartame in disguise!  and that goes for the blue, pink and yellow packets!

  3. All the talk seems to be coming from a chain letter sent over the Internet. Hey, if you read it in an e-mail, it MUST be true then, right? Read on...

    From Snopes:

Claim: The artificial sweetener aspartame has been proved responsible for an epidemic of cancer, brain tumors, and multiple sclerosis.

    Status: False.

    - To date, the FDA has not determined any consistent pattern of symptoms that can be attributed to the use of aspartame, nor is the agency aware of any recent studies that clearly show safety problems.

    - Analysis of the National Cancer Institute's public data base on cancer incidence in the United States - the SEER Program - does not support an association between the use of aspartame and increased incidence of brain tumors.

    - Even daily large doses of the high-intensity sweetener aspartame, also known as NutraSweet, had no adverse effect on study subjects' health and well-being, a visiting scientist at MIT reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. "We conclude that aspartame is safe for the general population," said Paul A. Spiers, visiting scientist in the Clinical Research Center (CRC).

    - A widely disseminated e-mail by a "Nancy Markle" links aspartame to Alzheimer's, birth defects, brain cancer, diabetes, Gulf War syndrome, lupus, multiple sclerosis and seizures. Right away, the long list warrants skepticism. Just as no single chemical cures everything, none causes everything.

  4. The American Cancer Society, Cancer Council of Australia and the Mayo Clinic all say aspartame is safe too.

Like all additives they do a toxicity study. You can read about it on the ACS website. The FDA monitors complaints and looks for patterns of dose/ and side effects to see if there is any patterns that emerges. So far none have, so this is a pretty good indicator that it is same. People complain about all sorts of things when they have aspartame, but there is no pattern in what types of complaints they have, or any relationship to how much aspartame they have (dose dependent relationship). So this indicates that there is not a relationship between aspartame and their symptoms.

It is not a proven carcinogen. It is legal in every country.

Obesity on the other hand is the second highest risk factor for developing cancer after smoking.

Coke says it is safe because it is. There have been many independent studies into this. The ACS has a list of some of them.

  5. Hi,

i'm unaware of the carcinogenic aspects of aspartame, however, my friend with ms told me not to use equal because vast consumption of it may cause ms-like symptoms in women - or nerve damage.

saccharine caused cancer in lab rats who were fed ridiculous amounts.

everything in moderation, and try to avoid chemicals.

splenda has no health warnings - tastes like sugar cause it's made from sugar.
