You are still moving at speed even if the car suddenly stops--and your insides are still moving too--brains can smash inside a skull and still kill you--even if have belts and bags properly being used. side impacts break necks with that sudden sideways snap.  Energy comes through the floor and shatters legs----I see it everyday--and yes we have seat belted and air bagged cars still kill people--ruotured aortas---smashed brains--the autopsies are UGLY !!

An object in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force.

If a car stops suddenly (for whatever reason), the occupants are still moving until they are stopped by the seatbelt, airbags, steering wheel, dashboard, windshield or whatever.

That is when injuries occur.

It's the basic law of kinetic energy.

In fact, I was in an accident yesterday. There is no doubt that had I not been wearing a seatbelt or if my airbags had not deployed, I would have likely suffered some serious injuries. As it is, the airbag hit me right in the chest and throat. I also have a bruise on my left arm and shoulder from the seatbelt (which locked).

My truck has moderate damage to the front end but can be repaired. My life, on the other hand, is a one-time deal. I lose it and I won't get it back.

People don't get hurt when the car stops. They get hurt when there body stops. hopefully it will be against a air bag and seat belts. If not it would be a hard object like steering wheel, dashboard, or windshield that stops them and that can hurt.
