Hi,

I'm thinking about moving from South Jersey to the Dallas Texas area for my job.

I've narrowed it down to Garland. Can anyone give me insight on how the area is?? Housing, recreational activities, diversity, entertainment, night life???

Details: I am a 28 year old single African American female, with a middle school aged son.

Any details would be Great!! Thanks!!

  1. Watch 'King of the Hill', it's a cartoon version of Garland. The creator, Mike Judge, lived in Garland for a while. He also created Beavis and Butthead.  Judge is about the same age I am now so what he remembers of Garland is how I also remember it. Some of the places in the cartoon actually exist there.

I lived in Garland when I was a kid in the early 70's and now it looks nothing like I remember. There are large parts of the town that are mostly Vietnamese, Hispanic and/or poor.

Garland has some good parks and rec activities and not much night life at all. They can only sell beer and wine in stores and not liquor. You would need to drive to another town to buy liquor. It's family oriented and conservative. Up until 3 years ago you couldn't even buy beer or wine in Garland.

Dry areas are something you will find funny here. In some places you cannot buy alcohol and need to have a membership to get a drink at a restaurant.

Dallas as a whole is pretty diverse. I know in the North people think people in Texas are a bunch of cross burning bigots, but it's not like that at all. As long as you are nice than it will be asy to make friends.

  2. I live in Garland currently. Its great here.

In my opinion Garland has the best schools in

    the DFW area.

Soem great Middle schools in Garland are

Austin Academy, and Classical Center At Brandenburg MS.

Hispanic people is a  majority in Garland.

also you might as want to live in Rowlett, which is

also a great city to live in. And shares same school district

    with Garland.

We also have a bus line, Dart Bus, which practicly goes everywhere in Garland.

I use it to go to school sometimes. (High School)
