I am only in high school going into grade 11 this coming year but have been pondering what I will do since I was practically born. I have wanted to be a lawyer, a social worker, an astronomer, an astronaut and a director and so on. However, I have narrowed down my list. I have high standards and expectations of what I want to do in life because I want to make something of myself. If you have experience in any of these fields, know anybody in any of these fields or know something about these fields even though you don't have experience please help me out. If you would like to guess still please do. If you think there are benefits to more than one than say it I am just trying to narrow down the list. I have come up with:

- Psychiatrist (I have always been interested in the human mind and helping people- although it does take 12 years of school)

- Film Producer and/or Film Director (Seems very interesting and wanted to be a director when I was a little kid)

- Music Producer (Again, seems pretty interesting)

- Entrepreneur/Business Owner (Being an entrepreneur is in my genes, I just have that drive. Also, when I was 13 I helped this guy in his 20's start up a business called AllStar Tickets. I have a lot of experience and know what it takes to run a business, especially for my age. I love it)

  2. You have time to explore all of these before making a decision. In fact, they're not all mutually exclusive, so you might do a few of them together or serially. DON'T narrow the list so early. Take high school and college classes for each of them before you decide.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, so they must go through all the schooling you mentioned. The majority of them just prescribe drugs these days, referring patients to psychologists for therapeutic counseling. This *may* be because they charge much more than psychologists do, and health insurance companies won't pay such high rates for ongoing therapy. (Not certain this is the only reason, but it is one factor.)

So consider psychology. You'd need a PhD, but you can go directly from a bachelor's degree to a 2-3 year PhD program. Psychologists make quite decent money, so don't think you'd be losing out by not being a psychiatrist.

Now, if you want to do psychiatric research, that's different. But again, unless you're researching psychoactive medications, you probably wouldn't need the MD.

Also consider cognitive psych and neuropsych, if you're interested in the brain and not just mental illness.

While there are thousands of psychiatrists and psychologists, only a few film and music producers and directors ever make it big. There is room for indie producers, corporate film directors, etc. but I don't think that's what you're looking for. If you're going to take film and music, turn out projects as professionally as you can. View each one as a chance to make it big, not as a class assignment.

So take psych, film, music, and basic business courses. Once you're old enough, you can try jobs at mental hospitals, in film and music and in startups. In film and music, your goal is to make yourself known as well as to learn.

If you come up with a great business idea, plan it out and see if you can make a go of it. No need to wait for graduation for that.

    Again, don't winnow out options.

  4. You are very bright and I congratulate you on getting your career plans now and get that head start to a bright future!  I highly reccommend law because I had wanted to study law, but married a loser and became a mother after high school and that was very dumb of me. That was then, this is now.  Go for law. Law can go hand in hand with any career so you can be an entrepreneur and /or music producer.  You will have the edge  because producers always consult lawyers and no one can fool you with legal speak!  you can work with investors in the music biz and a law degree opens many doors.  If the music biz is not your thing later you will never be without a good paying and interesting career. You will never have a "job", but a career! Jobs are for uneducated working drones.  You can always take side classes in psychology to satisfy the need to learn about the human mind. Ironically I settled fpr a career in paralegal work and I married a 2nd time to an attorney.  You have the history of working in business and my opinion is that law is for you.  It is your calling!  My husband went to college 9 years and he was young when he started like you.  It sounds like it takes a long time, but it is an investment. When you get rich and famous give yahoo people credit for helping encourage you!
