My fiance has a job offer in philadelphia and I have only been there 4 or 5 times, and that was just day trips because I used to live in Deleware so we would go shopping and to the historic part, but I am sure that area costs an arm and a leg! What are some nice, safe, family friendly parts of Philly? (I have two kids) Oh and we are not millionaires, so not the rich rich areas!

  1. I grew up in Philly and I have to agree with others on this site.  It's not the best place to raise a family.  I have two kids 22 and 24 and I wouldn't want them setting down there.  If you have two children, you want a good school district.  Where in Philly is your fiance's job?  I assume it is in center city.  Is he OK with commuting around 45 minutes by train?  I live in the Hatboro-Horsham school district.  Very safe, good schools, lots of malls nearby.  Tell your realtor you are interested in the western suburbs.

  2. http://www.bestplaces.net/COL/

i heard pittsburg is cheap and nice

EDIT: whoops....i got Pennsylvania and Philadelphia mixed up! sorry

  3. You can live in South Jersey as the housing is cheap and you get a lot of land for the kids play in.

    Check out:

    Cherry Hill

    Moorestown (expensive though)

    Pennsauken

    Cinnaminson (my hometown. Represent!)

    Mt Laurel

    Delran

  4. In this economic downturn, you should be able to make a deal for a decent place.  I think it would be better to go for a place closer to work than to make longer commutes.  You will end up spending the same amount of money anyway, and the wear and tear and frustration will be greater.

So look for the very best place possible that has good schools and is close to work.  Suggest you go to the western suburbs if you must go out.

  5. Hm well it really depends on how far into Philadelphia your fiance's job is. A lot of people just commute because the nice areas of the city are really expensive. The crime rate is pretty high in most areas of philly and I think that anything remotely 'safe' is going to cost you.

I live about a half hour away from philly and can still easily get into the city by train or car.

  6. I live in Northeast Philadelphia and it is nice out here (mid-northeast to far) and not as expensive as toward the city - center city, rittenhouse, olde city, ect. The further northeast you go in the northeast section of Philly, the more suburb you get - more single houses and bigger yards. Some neighborhoods that are nice are Rhawnhurst, Fox Chase, Somerton, Pennypack, and zips like 19114 and 19115.  Some areas of Roxborough are nice too. Good luck!

  7. WELL...TO BE HONEST PHILADELPHIA IS GETTING DANGEROUS AND ITS REALLY NOT A SAFE PLACE FOR A FAMILY....DONT GET ME WRONG PHILLY IS THE BEST BUT SOME PARTS OF PHILLY IS DANGEROUS BUT PHILLY LIVE IS BETTER TO ME....100'S OF CLUBS,RESTERAUNTS,ETC

  8. I lived in Philly for a while, near the Italian market. I loved the area and it was not too expensive.  I shared a 4 bedroom 3 bath house with roomies, and we paid 1200 total.  It was right near pats & ginos, had a small backyard, very nice area. The whole area 2nd-7th st. north of federal is nice and also cheap.

  9. Honestly it would depend on where the job offer is, as that would affect transportation options.  The Far Northeast is still pretty good, with easy transport into the city.  Society hill and Manayunk are younger.  And look across the river to Jersey, near some of the Patco stations, Marlton/Mt Laurel areas

  10. Stay as far as you can from Philadelphia. We lived there in 2001 and it was the worst nightmare in my life, some parts of city look abandomed, looted , burned down, infested, some Victorian style homes are looking bombed like Warsaw in 1942. I could not beleive my eyes it was a city in the USA. We lived in 8 miles from central postal office in the safe area in a nice pet friendly apartments on 4000 Presidential Blvd, apartments were small, a bit pricey, but we felt safe. Keep in mind that any apartment complex inside of Philadelphia has a major parking problem, we did not have any in Lincoln Green apartments: http://www.lincolngreenapartments.com/te...

Try to search this site with tenants reviews, maybe put a zipcode of Lincoln Green apartments address to stay within safe area of the city as an orientation.

    Also, check ApartmentsGuide web site.

    Good Luck!

  11. Outside the city:

    Inside:
