Consortium wins the maiden special weight at Aqueduct on 12th November
The two-year-old colt of Bernardini out of Marietta, Consortium hawked away the very first chance he was provided to break his maiden. Trained by Kiaran P. McLaughlin and ridden by A Garcia, Consortium won the maiden special weight race at the Aqueduct Racetrack
on 12th November.
Consortium put the second position holder of the race, Rise Against at the loss of 4 ¾ lengths and the third in line after the winner was School Spirit. It took Consortium 1 minute and 17.10 seconds to cover the distance of 6 ½ furlongs.
On a field of twelve contesting for breaking their maiden, the two-year-old bay colt broke from the stall with all due vigilance and found his comfort zone in the fifth place down the backstretch. At the turn he earned the edge by three strong strides after
which there was no threatening or challenging the colt.
“He’s done everything right and we have always liked him,” said trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. “He’s trained really well all along and has a great mind. Alan [Garcia] rode him great. He broke sharply and was able to sit and wait. It’s another nice win for Bernardini,
he is a great sire”.
The rest of the lineup included Love to Run, Market Strike, Common Bond, Trusted Choice, Film Shot, D’ Pepjo, Windsurfer, Imperial Crown and Rapacious. When and whether these horses will be able to break their maiden soon or not, Consortium’s connections
have already laid down some plans in the pipe line for his future.
The trainer, McLaughlin is still undecided as to test the bay colt by racing in an allowance or stakes and also needs to decide if Consortium will stay in Aqueduct or will have to be sent to Florida.
Being able to win the maiden quite remarkably was no coincidence for Consortium as his pedigree is very strong. His dam side breeding is nothing short of a spectacle as she had amassed $297,082 through a seven-year-old career. Marietta has quite an impeccable
record which includes victories such as 2007’s Grade 3 Iowa Oaks and Arlington Oaks.
Consortium is known to be Marietta’s first foal to race and has not let the legend of his mother down and his future performances will reveal how persistent he will be in keeping the quality intact.
