Question:

Constant eye redness (rebound hyperemia)?

About a year ago I started using Visine to releive minor redness in my eyes. Ever since then my eyes have been red constantly, every day unless I use these types of eyes drops to releive them. I have been doing some research online and have come across rebound hyperemia. I am almost positive this is my case. If I dont use the drops, the redness becomes worse. I would completely stop using the drops but where I work there are many bright flourescent lights...and well, I would look terrible with extremely bloodshot eyes. After using the drops my eyes become very dry and very sensitive to air and light. How long do you think it should take for my eyes to go back to normal after not using the drops? Also, are there any types of drops or ointments you guys suggest? Thanks

  1. It does sound like rebound redness - perhaps you could stop using them over a weekend and by the week they will start to look better?  I cannot say how long it will take for your eyes to start looking "normal" again but it's best to stop using them now as opposed to later.  Try using drops such as soothe xp, systane, or optive - all great drops to use that will not cause rebound redness.

  2. Stop using. You will get better. Best have bloodshot looking eyes for a few weeks than ruin them.
