  1. Latin.

  2. the stories behind lots of them are greek (or older), but most of the names are in latin.

a few are latinized versions of words from other languages, like tucana and dorado.

  3. I beg to differ. Most are named after Greek stories. Like Leo is the lion that Hercules killed, as with Hydra, and Cancer the crab is what Hera sent to distract him in that battle. Capricorn is the form Hephastus took to flee from the elder gods. Etc.

  4. The names used in modern astronomy have been Latinised.  Most came to us through the Classical Greek astronomers, but many of the names are much older (of course, they were changed as they move from one language to another).

For example, We still use the Greek name (Orion) for the Hunter.  However, the word orion, when traced further back, actually means warrior

(oarion).  Once you know that, then you can even see the link between the English word warrior and the constellation name Orion.

Still, when naming stars within the constellation, we use the word Orion as if it were a Latin word, with Latin declension.

the brightest star gets the first Greek letter (alpha) and the genitive form of the constellation name:  alpha Orionis (alpha "of Orion"), even if Orion is not really a Latin word.

The star alpha Orionis is called Betelgeuse (which, in English, is pronounced Bettle Juice).

The Latinisation took place when all scientists (in the western civilization) were writing in Latin, regardless of their own language and country.

  5. I think the constellations names are in Latin format.

  6. A. Latin

  7. the constellations are mostly in latin, but some of greek origin.  the names of most of the stars are in arabic, but some in latin or greek. (no, I don't think "alpha persei" or the like as a name)
