Question:

Constipation from supplements?

I tend to get extremely constipated from certain supplements to the point where i have to stop taking them. I had taken calcium and magnesium for leg cramps but i had to stop. Then i was taking kyolic and something else (i forget what) for another condition, and i had to stop that too.

Vitamins dont seem to bother me. But minerals and other things seem to. I like to try natural things rather than medicine, but this is a real problem that prevents me from trying lots of things. Any advice?

  1. If you take a daily supplement (which I think is a great idea) it's best to take a balanced, single vitamin rather than be "part smart" and try to balance things out on your own with separate individual products. Most nutritional substances work in conjunction with others, and the daily multivitamin has the right amounts of the right things for you to get the most out of the ingredients.

I didn't do an EXHAUSTIVE search, but I found this about calcium / magnesium / constipation:

If you're taking minerals, here's a copy/ paste from a page I found on iron / constipation (and I will also provide the link with all the details):

"Constipation is a common side effect of taking iron supplements. To help relieve constipation, slowly increase the fiber in your diet by including whole grain breads, cereals, fruits, and vegetables. Drinking at least 8 cups of fluids daily and increasing moderate exercise (as recommended by your physician) can also help you avoid constipation."

PS -- "Natural things" and "medicine" are not mutually exclusive.

  2. My doctor HIGHLY recommended the fiber from this company.  I tried EVERYTHING and this is what got me regular again.  I fell in love with their products.  You will love it.  This company  has been applauded and world recognized for it's cellular renewal, wild mushroom extracts and of course, the Fiber system and MUCH more.

It's the best line of health products that I've ever come across.  Light and blessings to you!

  3. Taking calcium and magnesium at the same time hinders each one's ability to be broken down and absorbed by your digestive system...therefore a lot of the vitamin is passed through unabsorbed anyway, which can lead to irregularity of your bowel movements.  One that is infamous for causing constipation is Iron supplements.

you really should be taking these vitamins and minerals on the advice of a nutritionist or a Physician.

  4. Liquid form or crushing helps with your issue.

  5. Calcium & magnesium actually work together for cardiovascular health.........  the best form of calcium to take is a chelated form which is easier to digest........  likewise for magnesium.

In order for calcium to be absorbed the body must have sufficient vitamin D ie ~ the sunshine vitamin .......  found in cold water fishes such as sardines and salmon.

have you checked the side of the bottle to see if perhaps the supplements that are upsetting your system contain an ingredient that you are intolerant to?? ie ~ yeast, gluten, starch, lactose, sugar, artificial colors or flavors, artificial sweeteners or preservatives, dairy products .........  any of these things could have a constipating affect if you are intolerant to them ..........  also, are you following the instructions on the bottle that guide you as to whether or not to take them with food and also that guide you specifically how much to take ...........  extra dosing with calcium supplements would cause constipation also....  this could also be the reason you are getting constipated from them.....;0)

hope this helps you a bit ♥

  6. Increase the fiber in your diet- by which I do NOT mean take a fiber supplement.  Eat raw vegetables- carrots, celery, cauliflower, broccoli.  Use your favorite ranch dressing as a dip, eat as many as you can, and drink a lot of filtered water.  The problem will be solved in a day or two.

Two cups of raw fibrous vegetables daily, and you'll never have that problem again.

  7. Why don't you just stop taking all these useless supplements?

He who diagnoses and treats himself has a fool for a doctor.
