My son has been on table food for about a week, he had not had a bowel movement until today and it was very solid and firm(like playdough), and he strained to get it out and it was not bigger than a silver dollar. What can I do to help him please.......I feel so bad.

  1. Talk to your doctor about a stool softener until he is more used to digesting table foods. Use fruit juices and wet fruits which tend to cause looser bowel movements to help as well.

  2. my son did this I was told by the doctor to give him a small amount(1table spoon per 8oz) twice a day of Karo Syrup, it works and he never knew it was in their . and it works in a day usually but its safe and never caused a belly ache to him.

And White Grape Juice works the best on loosing it up to!!!

  3. Some foods are more constipating than others.. maybe just try a different food group and see how it goes.  If he continues to have trouble, you may need to give something to get him going better.  My doctor had me give my child Miralax.

  4. His body is adjusting. Our doctor recommended apple juice. It's loaded with fiber.

  5. I would call your pediatrician first ... but as long as your son doesn't seem too uncomfortable, I wouldn't jump into using laxatives or stool softeners yet. Try increasing his liquids first. Eating solids can stifle your child's desire to drink, so make sure he's getting enough. Also avoid foods like cheese and bananas -- they can make constipation worse (yet are a great remedy to diarrhea!). You can also try cutting back on table foods for a while, substituting baby food, or whatever he was eating before. Then gradually add back table foods as he tolerates them. If he's able to handle chunkier foods, try green peas or soft carrots --  don't rush in to multi-ingredient foods. If you're desperate for a quick fix, try glycerin suppositories -- they work like a charm, are completely safe and are available at your local drug store.

  6. How old is your little one?? My 22 month old went through and is still going through this.. We finally got into see a Gastroenterologist and they prescribed her Miralax which you can buy over the counter now.. All you do is put a capful in their juice or water and it will help loosen their stool.. If you try this don't be alarmed but it will cause him to have diarrhea until he gets all the hard stool out.. I recommend you contact your doctor thou for further instructions.. Best wishes.. I surely hope this helps..

  7. Juice fruit juice will help also more veggies for fiber
