Question:

Constipation in new solid eater?

My 8 month old has been getting constipated about 1 or 2 weeks out of each month. I took her to the doctor twice for it. The first time they told me to wait 7 days then the second time, she said that she was just absorbing it all, which was wrong because a few days later she was going normally again.

I have been feeding her solids 4 out of 5 days for about 2 months and her bowel movements are becoming more solid. I give her half a teaspoon of milk of magnesia every 3 or 4 days and I don't want her to become dependent on suppositories.

I know that she's getting use to the solids still, but did anyone else ever have problems with this? What do you suggest I do?

  1. prunes prunes prunes lol

  2. With solids.... you will find some may back your baby up.... and some may REALLY make them go.  I find that it works best to use those items against each other.  I have found that Bananas will back my son up..... but prunes will make him go.  So I will give him banana's and then when he is ready for another fruit..... I will give him prunes.  Another good one I use is....   potato's back my son up...... but peas and squash make him go.  This is a really great..... natural way.... to help your child stay regualar while they are adjusting to their new diets and different foods.

  3. I know exactly what you're going through, i just went through this too!!

My son has alwas been a good pooper, lol, but when i started him on solids he started getting constipated, we tried pear, even suppositories =[ But the one thing that worked was Prune baby food. From a jar or homemade. I use gerber but i'm making my own soon. 4 tbsps a day at around 6pm. Trust me, it will work!!

    God Bless

  4. Prunes!!!

  5. This is normal and their bodies really are getting used to it.  My DD had horrible constipation when she was a baby.  We put a tablespoon of karo syrup in her bottle to help move things along.  You might also try switching to a different type of cereal.  Sometimes rice can be binding.  Talk to your dr. though before you switch.  If you don't like or trust what they say, find a new dr.
