the department of transportation of a large city is planning an adverstising campaign that encourages peopole to switch from private cars to mass transit. give examples of how the department can use the following to change commuters' attitudes: a) changing motivational function ; b) changing beliefs about public transportation; c) using self- percption theory and d) using cognitive dissonance

I could suggest a leaflet drop to all the houses along a particlar bus/trolley/metro route offering a free sample ie. a free day pass, for example, to enable them to use the service and find out for thjemselves how good it is.  This moust be coupled with a good reliable clean service for a positive effect.  Branding could be used, this could be a snappy modern theme or something that reflects the local heritage, for example Salem could use witch way for example.  

    Use of  bus/trolley priority schemes changes thew motorist's perception of public transport.  Imagine sitting in traffic jam as a clean, modern, comfortable bus passes you on a bus lane.

    Publicity could also point out the environmental benefits of public over private transport.
