Contact Lenses Users?

I have not used contacts in 10 years. I want to try a new brand that makes my eyes feel cool, soft, moist, not ithcy or scratchy. And most of all to fit comfortable. I see Acuvue and Johnson and Johnson and many other brand names but i dont know which one will be best. I want one that has everything I described up top.

When I bought my pair ten years ago they were the monthly wear. But later on I saw a report on CNN that their was an investiagtion found that the monthly were the same ones as the weekly and daily. But I am not sure if it was just one brand name.

What do you think and which do you think would be the best brand to buy with everything I described above? Please feel free to let me know all your good and bad experineces with diffrent name brands of contacts.

  1. I am kind of happy your contacts scratch.  You have some serious balls to question a mans skills as a father because his son is g*y.  Do some research before you make comments like that.

  2. ive been using johnson and johnson for a couple of years now,...and they're fine...but a few times ive travelled to the states and bought acuvue O2, and they're the best,.. very breathable... thing is, its not available here in the philippines.

but pretty much, the johnson and johnson brand is good... but im confused, did u mean the monthly disposables? or the kind of lenses that can stay on ur eyes for three days, even a week...

cos the thing is,... it isnt so much the brand,.. but how you maintain the lenses.

First is get a brand that allows maximum diffusion across it,... the cornea, which is the part of the eye where u put ur contacts over, has no source of oxygen except the air that diffuses through it,... so ud want a contact lens that would allow maximal O2 diffusion,... that way, ur cornea will not dry up, and u wont get irritated eyes.

second, is on u,.. how u maintain ur contacts. personally, id recommend the disposable type, as opposed to the extended wear. The disposable type is cheaper per piece, and yes, more expensive if you weight it on the expense vs period of use.... but lets face it, in a year, ud probbly lose that one contact, uh, say, 5 times? so,... its gonna be easier to replace them with the disposable cos one they're cheaper, and two, they were never meant to last a whole year so its not that big a loss.

third, with disposable lenses, after a month of use, u throw them away, and start with a pair of new, and CLEAN lenses. as opposed to a pair of extended wear wherein maintenance requires either boiling or protein pills,.. which are tedious,... and not very dependable. see, those stuff that u complained about, itchiness, irritation, they're all possibly due to the presence of anything particulate or not, between the lens and ur cornea that causes irritation to ur eyes... with a new pair of contacts at the end of the month,... there'll be new pairs of clean lenses with ZERO protein and particulate materials that will not cause irritation and itchiness...

    so,.. go for the disposables

  3. Like most people have said, there is no "best" brand, however there probably will be one you prefer

The itchy feeling that you had may have been caused by protein build-up on the lens as you went through the month.  That's one of the advantages of daily disposables, there's no time for that to occur and there's a reduced chance of infection because you don't need to use (sometimes ineffective) cleaning solutions.

You're right, there was a scandal about dailies and monthlies being the same lens but that was a long time ago.  Monthlies and daily lenses are definitely different these days.

If you go for dailies, I would say don't get sucked into all the hype about the Silicone Hydrogels dailies (SiH) which are about to launch and will be premium priced.  The extremely high Oxygen permeability they give is a necessity with extended wear lenses but it's not usually required in dailies.

The same goes for "super extra maximum comfort" type stories.  Manufacturers have to tell a story, otherwise it gets boring.  Think of how washing powder always used to be "new and improved", yet somehow had managed to clean your clothes from day one.  The lenses on the market are all strictly regulated and all do a very similar job.

Just because a lens is cheaper doesn't mean it's worse (or better) for you. So, why start on the most expensive lenses when you can try lenses like daysoft, Focus Dailies, CooperVision and bausch & lomb before you get to the more expensive ones like Acuvue.

And if you do find your preferred brand of contacts, it will probably have been by a much more personal choice than many of the manufacturers and optical retailers would like to admit.

  4. The truth is, one brand of contact lenses may work for one person may not work at all for another; that's why there are sooo many brands!  The only way to know which brand is right for you is to get an eye exam and contact lens fitting to try out the contacts.

There have been many technological advances in the last 10 years so i'm sure that you'll find a brand that works for you (assuming that your Rx is simple).  Many contact lenses, nowadays, provide more oxygen to your eye and retain moisture, which will help with discomfort and dryness.

Studies have found that the more frequently you replace your lenses, the less chance you have of complications like pink eye or swollen eyelids...granted that you care for your contacts  properly (proper care will also help keep your eyes feeling moist and comfortable)

Another thing that will help with discomfort is the kind of contact lens solution that you use.  Different manufacturers uses different chemicals and preservatives in their solution so, again, what works for you might not work for someone else.  In regards to people growing fungus in their eye due to contact lens solution.  it was found that the issue was due, in part, to consumer misuse of the product.  One should throw out used solution and use new solution each time contacts need to be stored.  you should never reuse solution or add "clean" solution to used solution.  Also, the container that holds the contacts should be cleaned/replaced every couple of months.

btw, someone suggested Acuvue O2...there's no such thing in the U.S..  in the acuvue family, there's acuvue, acuvue 2, acuvue advance w hydraclear, acuvue advance for astigmatism, acuvue oasys, and acuvue oasys for astigmatism.

  5. Try and use Acuvue. It's the best and make my eyes feel cool and comfortable, I accually like how they feel better on than off. The first week on wearing contacts will be a bit irritating since you havn't used them for so long but it only takes 1 week for you to get over it. Johnson had an investigation with some type of eye fungus infection so I wouldn't recommend that because the fungus could cause you to loose complete eyesight.

  6. Proclear is one of the newest brand. They are great.
