Question:

Contacts -- Burning?

So I put both the left and right contact lenses in the same solution, in two different compartments for each. I put the left one in and it was fine. The right one was a little hard and dried up (there was less solution in it), but I put some more solution into the lens and I put it in. But it was burning, so I took it out and opened a new box for the right lens. Is my right eye okay? Does wearing temporarily a semi-dried-up lens damage your eye?

  1. On most contact lens solutions, it will state that you should let the lens sit in the solution for an hour or two.  Your eye is just slightly scratched and just needs time to heal.  By tomorrow, you will have forgotten all about this incident.  You should leave your contact lens out until tomorrow though or your eye will hurt more.  It needs time to heal though.

  2. you shouldnt put in dried contacts because they can seriously damage you eye sight. if your eyes continue to bother you i'd go see you doctor.

  3. If a lens has been allowed to dry up, even though you can re-hydrate it by soaking it for a few hours, its shape will probably be distorted, and therefore, it will not fit the eye properly, and your pain could be for that reason.  If it is scratched, it needs time to heal without a lens in.   Burning, (as opposed to a pure, distinct pain) is often the result of contamination being introduced into the eye:  make sure your lens(es) and hands are clean,  and always use fresh solution for rinsing, soaking and storage.  Also, if you try to use lenses for too much longer than they are designed, they tend to lose their ability to retain moisture as they age, and the resulting dryness can cause blurring and discomfort.  If you wear them daily, you'll know when/if the lens just isn't usable anymore.
