Question:

Contacts and Swimming?

I've heard people say that swimming with your contacts is bad, but I've been doing it for a few months, and i know lots of people who do it, and it doesn't bother them. I just don't open my eyes underwater, unless I'm using really good goggles, and i wipe the water from my eyes. What do you think?

  1. It's bad because soft lenses are like sponges and will absorb all the chemicals and any pathogens in the water and hold them against your eye.  This can lead to irritation or infection.  The water can also distort the material of the lens.

But obviously people do it all the time and don't get irritation or infections, but they are still putting themselves at risk.

I don't think there is anyway to be at a pool (or the shower for that matter) and not get water in and around your eyes unless you wear goggles constantly.

If you do a lot of swimming, I suggest you get some prescription goggles.  It's up to you, though, how much you want to put your eyes at risk.

  2. well, as long as water doesn't get in ur ok. cuz i lost a contact that way.

  3. i just came back from the pool, and i didnt take my contacts out! i feel fine, and i dont think it has any drawbacks. as long as it doesnt hurt for you, i think its alright :)

    hope i helped!
