Contacts exam?

I'm getting contacts for the first time soon. Do you just ask your doctor that you want contacts before a regular eye checkup and they'll do the exam? And does it have to be done by a doctor or can it be done by an optician?

When you make your appointment tell them you want to be fit for contact lenses. Your exam and fit ideally s hould be done by the same person and same office. But, that depends on the state and the country you are in.
