Question:

Contacts shrinking in solution?

Hi, I'm pretty new to the whole contacts thing. I've had them for a couple of weeks now, but I don't wear them everyday. I either wear them everyother day or when I feel like it because I have glasses already. So here is my problem:

I have the Dailies brand contacts, a box that has I believe 90 lenses. I keep the box in my bathroom, and my family likes to take hot showers. I was wondering if that could affect the contacts' size at all in any way. I have been noticing lately that some of the contacts are smaller than others, and the smaller ones tend to pop out of my eye after while. I think the two problems are related. I have no idea why some would be smaller than others because they all came from the same unopened box. I don't have this problem everyday that I wear contacts, but I am concerned that I may be harming them without realizing it. Please help me figure this problem. Thanks.

  1. I would call your optometrist/optician, and ask.  He (or she) would know best, especially with the contacts that you were given.  It might be a common problem with your solution or something.

  2. Contact lenses are plastic and you know plastic can't be exposed to high levels of heat. I've never heard of this before but they could be melting.

Something similar happened to me when I tried to sterilise my retainer with boiling water and it shrunk, damaging it.

I also tend to put my contacts in the refrigerator. Although this isn't required, I find them more comfortable when wearing them.

You should move the contacts away from any sources of direct heat.

Edit: Also, you MUST return your contacts to the solution IMMEDIATELY after taking them out. They dry very fast and can shrivel up, damaging them.

  3. i keep mine in my bathroom medicine cabinet, have been doing it for years, and i've never had this problem. i would find it hard to believe heat from a shower could even get to them since they are in a sealed package with solution. plus, there isn't THAT much heat from a shower...maybe 90 degrees max. the heat from a shower wouldn't be enough to harm many things. perhaps you just aren't putting them in right and getting a good fit. if you just started wearing them, don't be surprised when they fall out. it takes a while to get it right. also, use rewetting drops. that helps, especially if you get dry eye at work. also, the first time i had contacts the doctor messed up the size of my eyeball and they were too big for me. they started falling out probably once every 2 months or so, which is way too often. you might want to go back to the doctor and get your eye resized.
