Alberto Contador "too eager" for the Vuelta a Espana victory, Miguel Indurain
Former Spanish cyclist Miguel Indurain has noted that Alberto Contador of Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank is trying a little too hard for the Vuelta a Espana victory.
The five-time Tour de France winner noted that the Spaniard needs to choose between the tracks and an attack should be launched more carefully.
“I think Alberto Contador is riding with too much eagerness,” Indurain wrote in

“I think someone should calm him down […] and explain that it is better to attack less often, but with more effectiveness and a better result”.
“Because, when you attack, the aim has to be to do damage to your rivals”.
“Alberto is riding like he’s in a hurry, as if the Vuelta finished tomorrow, when the reality is that it’s only just starting,” Indurain continued.
“He wants things now, and sometimes, when you ride on the counterattack, it can bring the opposite effect”.
Contador is definitely eager as he has zero victories in his bag for the current season since the CAS handed him a two-year ban from professional cycling.
Moreover, all his previous victories since the Tour de France 2010 have also been nullified by the authorities and the cyclist does not have many options but to tray for an overall victory.
The 29-year-old used the Eneco Tour to fine-tune his form ahead of the Vuelta and rode exceptionally well to secure the fourth overall position at the race.
He was 1 minute behind the race leader Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver after the stage 10 classifications with Christopher Froome of Team Sky Procycling holding the second spot.
The Spaniard finished second during the 39.4 kilometre Individual Time Trial stage 11 of the race.
His second place finish during the race has earned Alberto the second overall position after the stage 11 classifications with a deficit of only one second on the race leader.
Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver still leads the Vuelta a Espana stage 11 classifications with Christopher Froome 16 seconds behind at the third spot.
Only time will tell if Contador manages to find the right momentum to secure his first win of the 2012 season.
