So, here is one question for my geology class. Q:Give a detailed explanation for the drop off (decrease) of species diversity during continental collision?

So, when continental collision happens, a lot of species face to extinction due to the land they live coud be below the other land, which means they can't live. "So a lot of them face extinction or decrease their numbers." That is my answer, but I feel this isn't enough for this question. Could you give any tips for me? How should I think for this kind of question?? (FYI i am not science person, and taking Geology course for requirement...)

  1. yes

  2. Continents collide very, very slowly - the effects aren't really seen in single generations. Also, when continents collide, they aren't dense enough to subduct into the mantle in the same way that oceanic crust does. Instead, mountain ranges are formed.

The decrease in species diversity is caused by the loss of habitat - the majority of marine life lives on the continental shelf, just off the coast of continents. When continents collide, this area is effectively lost (it may become uplifted onto the land, amongst other things), thereby reducing the area in which shallow marine organisms can live. As such, shallow marine species diversity decreases (and theoretically, and in many cases, actually decreases to 0).
