Question:

Contractors left skimmer an eyesore. what can i do?

We recently had our pool refinished and installed what I believe to be an Admiral skimmer. The contractors left the skimmer about 2 inches raised from the ground. I have noticed that other pools have the skimmer flush to the ground and feel it looks ugly. Their response is that they left it like that in case we ever decided to tile the deck. I have no plans in the near future to tile the deck and feel that it is an eyesore as well as unsafe because someone may trip over it. At this point is there any solution like cutting off the excess so it is flush with the ground or replacing it with a different skimmer? Should I just leave it like that? Please help!!!

  1. call the contractors back, tell them you have no plans to tile the deck and ask them to properly finish the job

  2. I assume you had a contract, If you didnt suggest that you were going to tile or deck then he is wrong, it should be flush to the base edge.

Call him back to correct.  If he wont you will have to get it fixed.

  3. If you've got a concrete pool, and the skimmer was just set too high....you're out of luck!  I'm assuming that you have a concrete deck surrounding the pool and the skimmer.  If so then the only thing that you can do is to cut away the excess.  Is the skimmer set to the appropriate height as far as the pool water level is concerned?  The contractors excuse is BS!  Somebody messed up!   Most skimmers can be fitted with an adjustable collar that will slip inside of the skimmer body and will allow for any type of deck application ie. cantilever or pavor decking.  There is no reason that the skimmer should be above the deck height.  Also, be sure that the exposed portion of the "skimmer" is not actually the adjustable collar that I mentioned.  If you have more than one skimmer, they should be set at the EXACT same height!  Make the contractor fix it!
