Contractual stipulation gives Dereck Chisora Vitali Klitschko should he beat Wladimir
Big-time British boxing promoter Frank Warren has confirmed that the stakes are even higher than anticipated for Dereck Chisora in his upcoming December 11 fight with WBO/IBF/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko.
Should Chisora manage to defeat the heavily favourite Klitschko, he will immediately be eligible for a subsequent fight with WBC champion Vitali Klitschko.
Warren confirmed that an initial contract signed with Wladimir contained a clause mandating a fight with older Klitschko brother Vitali for Chisora should he win.
In the case that Chisora defeats both brothers, he will be the WBO/IBF/IBO/WBC heavyweight champion, respectively.
The December 11 bout will take place at the SAP Arena in Mannheim, Germany, the venue in which Wladimir Klitschko won his second world championship title against Chris Byrd.
Vitali Klitschko defends his WBC title this Saturday against former WBO titlist Shannon Briggs in Hamburg. Briggs is the underdog, but is hoping to catch Vitali early on with some of his dynamite knockout power.
The contract offered to Chisora is similar to the one Wladimir originally offered WBA heavyweight champ David Haye. Haye, however, turned the contract down with the complaint that the brothers were trying to lock him in for his next three fights. Chisora,
on the other hand, expressed gratitude at the possibility to win an additional championship should he trudge through Wladimir.
Warren confirmed Chisora’s position on the matter: “When I talked to him about the opportunity, he insisted that I take it. Unlike David Haye, for Dereck this is about the challenge, not the money. He really believes that he can beat Wladimir. It's in
the contract that if he beats Wladimir then he has to face Vitali next, but he's got a big job ahead of first," Warren mused.
"Vitali is waiting in the background and I'll deal with him once I've dealt with Wladimir," Chisora said.
