Thanks for your Answers! Please rad entire description!

I need an upbeat song/semi recent[dreamgirls esk but not dreamgirls bc its too high] for an audition.

And I need one that would be a good audition song for Candide. And another for Into the Woods.

The songs CANNOT be from the shows.

CONTRALTO. Low. Not high notes. I want it all in my "chest voice." Meaning NO high notes. I need very low like jazz singers, but a song that would be good for the auditions stated above.

things that have not worked: jennifer husdon[she is a bit too high!], a few mariah carrey songs, oleta adams[not right style,] Oliver[the show],Anita Baker (songs like Sweet Love, Angel), Amy Whinehouse Trouble, Nina Simone, Rihanna[not right style!]etc.

  1. Well not knowing how old you are or what your "type" is, here are some general suggestions...

For stuff with a more belted feel that can be sung in a really solid chest voice, try some songs from Cabaret... "Mein Herr" and "Maybe This Time" especially are very low. Also, "There Are Worse Things I Could Do" from Grease is overdone, but still a good alto song. Same goes for "I'm Not That Girl" from Wicked... everything from Wicked is way overdone at auditions, but it IS good music.

As far as stuff with a more traditional sound, try "Why Can't You Behave" from Kiss Me Kate, or "My Husband Makes Movies" from Nine. Evita has some good stuff, too, like "I'd Be Surprisingly Good For You" or "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" (also overdone). And for Into the Woods especially, "The Miller's Son" is a great song in a nice low range from another Sondheim show (A Little Night Music).

Candide is its own animal, especially for someone with no soprano range. Since it has such a classical sound, you might consider auditioning with an actual classical piece in your voice range. They publish a lot of the more popular arias and art songs in all sorts of keys, so it shouldn't be hard to find.

Hope some of that helps! Break a leg with your auditions!
