  1. aspirin from willow tree bark

  2. in what way??? you can go on and on about the different types of plants used in a whole host of things like cotton, in medicines eg asprin, quinine morphine, digitalis ; paper, gums resins and the list is endless.

People who investigate plants can come from a range of areas like biochemistry, biotechnology and combined with what they know about the plants garnered from botany and horticultural knowledge.

There are many branches of botany, you can be involved in the naming and classification of plants which also involves studying plants in various way eg what is a species and what members belong to that species...a rather complex question to be honest.

there is biogeography looking at where plants have come from in certain areas, how they got there, how they spread into new areas.

THere are a lot of work involved with evolution and adaptions of plants.

THere are those that look into the anatomy of plants and this can be used in areas like using different woods for different uses ( eg i know of a project looking at how a certain type of wind that was affecting the growth of trees...literally making the tree lean which affected the wood density and affected the quality of the wood being produced)

just studying plants means you can discover things that may be of use in other areas.
