Controversial Gymnastics Q...?

Question

Lol no, this isnt another Nastia wuz robbed Q but rather the double gold Q.

I'm just curious WHY the IOC or whoever decides that sort of thing did away with the double gold for tie scoring routines like that of Nastia and He? Is it a bad rule?

And do you think its better to reinstate the double gold instead of using this new, complicated tie breaking rule that no one seems to understand?

I think the rules should be how it is, there should only be one winner.  The problem is the amount of people that do not know or understand the rules.  I think they need to inform people clearly of this on the telecast.  I think they should have expert commentary on all events so that when a couch potato who knows nothing about the sport can understand what the judging is based on and stop whinging.

I think there shouldn't be two golds.  It just takes away from winning because you are sharing the victory with another team.

If the tiebreaking system was explained a little better (or just revamped so it's not as confusing, because Nastia was still confused after it was explained to her) then it would be fine.  But at that time NOBODY knew what the tiebreak was, and it was a scramble to try and figure out.

By the way I've been researching the tiebreak system...and I'm still confused.

Allow too many people on the medal stand and the glory is diluted. The ancients only had one winner, anything short of winning didn't count. But personally, watching so many athletes end with nothing is too heart breaking and I like runners up.

But there "should" only be one champion in my view. Keep the tie breaking rules, and make sure everyone understands the rules before they compete. Including spectators! Even TV spectators :) No outbursts due to uninformed fans claiming Unfair!

I think there should be 1 gold winner 1 silver winner & 1 bronze winner. But USA got robbed cause our girl was just a little more perfect. No offense to China. They are awesome athletes.

International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) sets the rules for the gymnastic competitions including the Olympics.  I hope that with all the uproar over the double gold this year that they will return to giving it once more in 2012, or at least allow it when  the first tie breaker step still results in a tie.

It was implemented just after the Atlanta 96 games in 1997.  Something must have happened in Atlanta, do a check.
