What do you think about controversial characters in tv shows, stories...etc?

For instance one of my favorite tv characters always seem to get the controversial roles...some praise her for the decisions she makes and other detest her for it. But she is indeed one of the strongest assests to the show I watch and also the top leading lady.

what does it mean when writers/produces create such a character ? Do you like charcter exploration- Different levels of a character?

Regardless of what my favorite character does, I have this strong sense of loyalty to her , and her actions are always justified in my eyes and its helps that she is the writers personal favorite.

I personally love controversial characters. I am a heavy fan of a realistic point of approach though. I think that humans are controversial characters by nature. No one is going to do the absolute "right" thing. It depends on the "human" that judges. And where his or her morals lie. Obviously Hitler was a sick, pyscho man who deserved to die a horrible, slow death. But would everyone agree on that? So even Hitler is controversial on whether he was morally "right" or morally "wrong".

(I am not supporting Hitler only giving an exterme example!)
