Controversy on Indianapolis Colts’ QB Peyton Manning twists on reports he wanted to play in 2011– NFL News
A controversy around the recovery and return of Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback, Peyton Manning, has taken another twist in the face of the reports that the player was willing to play for Colts in the later part of 2011 National Football League (NFL) regular
season.
Reports of his desire of playing football in December 2011 emerged following another disclosure that Peyton Manning had four procedures on his neck in past 19 months, instead of three, which had been claimed by all sides, earlier.
This reflects that nothing is final and conclusive as far as the QB’s recovery from injury, fitness, arm strength and his chances of playing for Colts are concerned.
In line with the atmosphere of uncertainty and confusion, some sections of media have claimed that the player had thrown ball in front of his head coach, Jim Caldwell and vice chairman, Bill Polian, at a post-practice session on December 14, 2012.
His throws were at 85 per cent, which well qualify him of playing for his side and this told to be an obvious wish of the player.
As the chances of him coming back increased and his participation in last couple of Colts’ games looked inevitable, Polian came up with a rare statement that the player had not shown the promise that could convince his side on his fitness.
(Manning) did not "come far enough to make it prudent for him to step on the field in game action," the then vice chairman had said.
His concerns were backed by the head coach in next few days, who confirmed that the player would not be practicing along with their squad and would work on his recovery through individual workout, instead.
Nothing had been said by the player in contradiction of those statements then, some reports had hinted that the decision of leaving the player out of the team for rest of the season was well in line with aspirations of the team’s owner, Jim Irsay.
A statement by one of Colts receivers, who were at the receiving end of throws by Manning, had claimed that the player’s throws reflected on his strength and power and it was a possibility that he played for Colts in the later part of the season.
Irrespective to the claims made then and now, it remains the fact that Peyton could not make it his squad during the entire past season.
He is still out of the side with lingering questions about his recovery from a neck injury and gaining his full throwing-arm strength.
These questions have gained more prominence in the wake of a recent report claiming that the last surgery on right neck side of the player was his fourth in the span of 19 months, and nothing is conclusive on the progress he has made from the surgery.
