Question:

Conundrum with the fishes...?

I just returned from an adventure to PetSmart, I live on a military base so any adventure off base is a bit of a drive. Anyway. I was dead set on ryukins, which I got two of and they are ever so pretty. The only thing is that there was this gorgeous Oranda. I'm not normally a fan of Orandas, but this one was sooo pretty. I have a 50 gallon tank...but the Oranda was HUGE compared to the Ryukins, like big as your fist. So it probably wouldn't be a good idea because the Oranda would eat all the food. I was thinking of getting a divider. They had one at the store, but it didn't look all that great. Is is possible? Or would it be cruel? Any advice on dividers? Or should I just give up on the idea?

  1. Goldfish are very peaceful, and both these types of fish have the same body shape (thus the same swimming ability). So I don't think that it should be a big problem.

Watch your fish when you feed them just to make sure the ryukins are getting enough to eat.  If the oranda turns out to be a little piglet, I'd suggest buying a type of sinking pellet for the ryukins, and a flake food for the oranda (or vice versa).  This way, the food is not just in one place, and everyone can get some.

If that doesn't work, I'd look into getting a divider (I don't like them much either).  Get a glass one if you can (as opposed to acrylic). They look nicer.

  2. try it and see if there ok

  3. well, just watch your goldfish eat, you know?

your tank is definately big enough. even for an Oranda the size of your fist.

Im sure your familliar with goldfish, monitor the ammonia levels, and your tank, make sure you have good filtration and I don't think that they'll get very territorial because after all, they are gold fish.

All will be well, I think you should go for it and s***w the divider.

  4. In such a large tank, you shouldn't have any trouble selectively feeding the Ryukins.  Tossing a few bits of vegetables or fruit (oranges, broccoli, lettuce, spinach, squash, etc.) or using pre-soaked Goldfish flakes.  It should be fine, and really, I'd just leave the divider idea alone...

EDIT: More feeding rings could work, but really, you shouldn't need them-- just feed where the Oranda will see the food, and then feed right next to the Ryukins.

  5. it,s not cruel but if you put enough food for him at the top let him eat and then net him against the tank put the food in and let the others eat but you could feed regualary and the other fish will watch him eat and learn to come when they se you with food the tank dividers will hold the fish on the other side they just look horabale and are basicly an unidenified algae growing device it will grow algae and spread to the rest of your tank i have had the same delema the others see the competition for food and learn wen its time to eat. im only 12 but ive had fish for a long time and i no what hapens petsmart also has a 14 day moneyback gaurentee if you dont like your fish take it back i think im your best answer
