Conures bite(20 characters long)...?

I want a conure but they always bite when I try to pet them at PetSmart. I guess they think I'm trying to give them food. I kepts petting one but then he/she'd just turn around and try and bite. If I get one I'll be able to hold it without it trying to bite me all the time, right? And I know they trim/cut their wings. They grow back right? Sounds like a stupid question but when I think about it, I dont even know...

  1. ALL birds will bite. It's their ONLY means of self defense, other than flying away.

Some birds are very "beaky", which means they use their beaks like a third foot, to climb and grasp (not necessarily BITE, but just to hold on). My three caiques are like this. They DO bite sometimes, but the key is to NOT let the bird know you're afraid of being BITTEN.

If the bird is just reaching out to you with its mouth open, that doesn't necessarily mean it's about to bite you. It could just be looking for something to hang onto.

You don't cut their WINGS. You trim their FEATHERS. If you don't know how to do it, take it to a vet or to a pet store that sells birds (usually there's someone there who knows what they're doing).

By the way, PLEASE consider getting a bird from a PRIVATE breeder, instead of PetSmart. You'll get a better socialized bird that's not so prone to bite (but still, ALL birds will bite under certain circumstances). You'll also pay a MUCH fairer price - pet stores mark their prices up more than 200% -- which means if you see a bird being sold there for $400, you can bet your life they didn't pay half that for it.

  2. my suggestion is try not to buy birds from pet stores like petsmart/petco, the birds don't have too much human interaction, which can make them very aggressive in or out the cage. plus, petsmart and petco get their animals from mills, which are is unpleasant place for animals, even humans wouldn't want to live there, the animals bascially are bred for pure profit and aren't well treated..

try to go to a private breeder who is socially interactive with their birds, the birds often adapt to humans better and are well trained

but if you are going to, that's your choice,

and it's normal for a conure to a bit protective of itself if it isn't used to a person, but, you should try to interact with all the conures to see which is more friendly. don't try to pet them if they haven't have much human interaction, they'll mistake you for trying to attack it. it will bite you from inside the cage because most birds are territorial or they just aren't used to you yet. but if you take it home and give it some time to adjust to a new home and a new owner, i'm sure it'll warm up to you and won't bite you train it well enough and give it some time to adjust, it won't bite you when it's out of the cage with you. but when you do get bitten, and you are it's new owner, try to disipline him/her with a firm "NO" DO NOT by all means try to raise your hand at it or pretend to hit the bird, it'll just be scared.

sun conures are great compainions who love attention and affection from it's owners

if you're going to clip the wings, take it to a professional who knows what they're doing, and ask to be in the room with the bird while they do it for obvious reasons

if you wanna learn more about care and behavior, you can buy a book about them at a pet store

  3. Any bird that isn't hand raised from birth will bite.

They can be trained not to bite but it takes time.

Don't assume that You will get one, bring it home

and it's going to be a totally different bird.  A conure

can bite a hole right though your hand.  I have had one

do that to Me.  If you're planning on getting one, Please

get all the information you can and ask all kinds of questions

first.  They are a parrott, they live a long time and take a lot

of attention and care.  If they don't get the attention when they want

it, they will scream, make all kinds of noise and Yes Bite too.

Think about it, before you make this choice.
