So I am going to the eye doctor tom. and I am wanting to get some contacts. I have had glasses for way to long and am way tired of them. Question is, to people who wear contacts which ones do you think is better and also as far as prices goes what are you looking at? I just want to get an estimate of how much I would be spending and does anyone know around what it cose for the Conact lens exam.

Anything that anyone has to offer with experiance would be greatly appreciated.

  1. I had my exam recently, nad I paid $46, plus I got free pair of contacts.

I use Acuvue Oasis, and change them every 2 weeks. One box ( three pair) costs about 25-30 depends where ( online stores are cheaper ).

  2. Disposable will be better

  3. Disposable lenes are much healthier for your eyes because they are changed more often. There is also a lot less maintenance to keep them clean, etc. However they are also more expensive. Our doctors often prescribed lenses that were replaced every 1-2 months as opposed to every 2 weeks. The montly lenses ran anywhere from $150-$320 for a year supply, depending on the prescription. Toric lenses for astigmatism are more expensive than standard spherical lenses.

Contact lens exams are also more expensive initally. The comprehensive exam must be done first, then a contact lens fitting and follow up care. Several follow up appointments are usually required for a new contact lens patient to ensure the fit is good and the prescription is also correct. Sometimes several different sets of lenses must be tried to get the best fit. Confirm what the office policy is and make sure all follow up appointments and lenses are included in the initial fitting fee because you don't want to pay more than you owe.

The office I worked for charged $140 for an exam and $90-$150 for a fitting depending on the prescription, type of lenses fitted and number of follow up appointments necessary.

  4. You will want to get a disposable lens of some sort.  They are cheaper and easier to take care of.
