Question:

Conventional oven has hole in rear right burner

I've always noticed that when cooking in my oven, the rear right burner (electric) always seems to heat up, as in if I left a pot of water there then baked a loaf of bread or something, the water would boil. I always thought it was some kind of wiring problem. But when I was cleaning under the range today, I noticed that there is actually a hole, about an inch in diameter, which leads down into the oven. Does anyone have any idea why the oven manufacturer put that there?

  1. I agree, it's a vent to help regulate the heat in the oven.  It helps create more of an even temperature.

  2. As others have stated this hole is a vent for the oven. You may sometimes see smoke exit the oven here if there has been a spill inside. Some deluxe ovens will install smoke eliminator system in this area also. A word of caution: as you have found out this area can get very hot. Be sure not leave anything plastic near this burner that could melt. You may also utilize the free heat to melt butter, warm milk, and help dough rise.

  3. It's a vent for the oven.  Standard on ranges, gas or electric
