i want to convert a 1994 chevy fleetside 6.5l turbo diesel to run on waste vegetable oil.... what would the oil filtering process be? also is ther a difference in performance? and does it mess up ur engine?? i plan on gettin a kit from greasecar.com which consists of all the lines, solenoids, tank, fittings, and a computer to automatically switch it from diesel to veggie oil...

  1. 50 micron is a little too large for supplying the injection pump, you need to get smaller than this. Since you're running a 6.5 you don't exactly have to get down to 2 micron but 10 micron would be sufficient with 2 being even better.

On my truck I run a staged filtration system. First my fuel is filtered with a 24 micron strainer and then flows to a 7 micron filter and fuel/water separator. It then flows to a 2 micron filter before the injection pump.

If you have a strong enough lift pump you can build your own system fairly easily for the truck system. I used parts from Glacier Diesel to build my system on my truck.

Before you put the veg oil in you need to filter it as best you can. If you have a circulating pump and send the fuel through a staged system you can filter it constantly or just filter it when you pump it in.

  2. "Greasel" users filter their oil in several stages.  Screens or cheesecloth takes out the bits of french fries and breading.  From there you need to filter down to 50 microns or so to avoid clogging the pump and injector passages.

There have been some studies showing carbon buildup in VO-powered diesels running at low load, but if you run at high load this should not be a problem.

VO has slightly less energy than diesel, so you will either have to adjust the injector pump to allow more fuel delivery or accept a reduction in peak power.
