Convert a dat file to wmv?

Question

We had a silly pop video made on holiday and I want to publish it to FB but its a .dat file, I want to convert it to something compatible like a .wmv or .mp4. Does anybody know of any good free (and easy to use!) file converters out there? It doesn't eve have to be a full version.
