  1. Cable companies have locked the ports or actually have dummy ports on the DVR's. They are not able to support copywrite infringement, so they are required to not make this possible.

  2. Hi kyleinator872,

You can do it with DVD Xpress.

With DVD Xpress you can transfer your video to your hard drive and then edit it if you desire. DVD Xpress comes with basic video editing software. I got mine at Sam's for $59.95 but that was over a year ago. They are cheaper now. You can look at one & read about it here - http://www.usb-ware.com/ads-dvd-xpress.h...

I saw a newer model at WalMart recently. It was the DVD Xpress2. I can’t remember what it cost for sure but I think it was $29.95.

You connect the composite output of your DVR into the DVD Xpress and connect the DVD Xpress to your computer via a USB cable.

  3. If your DVR is a TiVo, TiVoToGo will allow you to copy shows recorded from your TiVo to your PC or Mac.

I have tried this and it does work.

If you have a Cable company DVR, there are two potential options:

    1) Get a video capture adapter for your computer, connect the video out to the video in on the capture adapter, use the "Save to VCR" option on the DVR and the record/capture video option on your PC.  For example:

I have tried this and it does work.

    2) If you have the Motorola DVR used by Comcast and other Cable Companies, you can follow these instructions for transfering programs from the DVR to your PC using Firewire:

I have not tried this and so can't comment on whether this works or not.
