If what you're trying to do is put this number into a notation where it's just one number over 16, then what you do is multiply the bottom number by the whole number (aka, the -3*16) then add the 7 to that (or subtract in this case- -48-7) and that is the new numerator for your fraction.  

The answer should be -55/16.

Note:  if the subtraction and addition thing is confusing, then just do the whole process ignoring the negative sign, then just tack in on at the end... the result is the same
