Convert video to other format but keep original screen resolution size size?

Question

i jst downloaded a movie and i like the quality but it wont let me burn it into a dvd because of the format so i want to conver this video to .avi how can i convert this video bust still keep the original screen size it came with in the download? basically i want to convert without applying changes to screen etc. ideas?
