Question:

Converting GPA to a 4.0 scale?

I'm a junior at my current high school, but I'm not exactly sure how to convert my GPA to a 4.0 scale. The school uses a 100 point version; however, depending on the classes I take, certain weights are added to the averages.

Averages for Academic level classes are multiplied by 1.0, Honors classes are multiplied by 1.1, and PreAP/AP classes are multiplied by 1.2. For example, if one year I took 7 AP classes and scored a 99 in each, the school would say my GPA is 118.8.

What I'm wondering, is how would I convert my Freshman GPA of 108.1 to the 4.0 scale that is used by colleges?

  1. You cannot directly convert a percentage to a GPA.  If you had all A's to get your GPA of 108, then you have a 4.0.  But if you had any grades below an A (A- or less), you do not have a 4.0.  You need to go back, change each of your percentage grades to a letter grade on your school's system (weighted or unweighted, but be consistent), change that to a number on the 4.0 system (see below), multiply that number by the number of credits the class was worth (1 if you don't know), add them all up, and divide by the total number of credits to get your GPA.

    A = A+ = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, etc.

    The disadvantage to your school's system is that even your weighted GPA won't appear to be above 4.0, while it will in other systems that just add numbers to your score in the 4.0 system.
