Converting Video?

Question

Are there any video converting programs out there (that are free) that are good with converting video for youtube and editing. what i'm mainly looking for in a program is whether or not it can convert into a widescreen look and put the frames on it.

this is the camera i use.

and i want a widescreen look like that, but i cannot seem to find a convetring program that will make it look like that. anyone have any suggestions ?
