my wife bought a ceiling light online, and when it arrived it was a plug-in. the junction box on the ceiling is supplied with 12-2 romex from a 20 amp wall switch. is there any danger in converting the cord from a plug-in to a hard-line connection? if not, what is the process (neutral, ground and hot goes where)?

  1. You can just cut the plug off and wire it in with wirenuts.  Stranded wire is a bit harder to catch under the wirenut so make sure you have it secure.  The correct way to wire it is black to the center of the bulb socket and white to the outside (s***w in) of the bulb socket, so if you have a continuity tester do it that way.  You will have no ground wire to the fixture, so if the utility box is metal, securely connect the ground wire to it.
