Converting to vortec heads!?

does anyone know the modifications involved in converting to newer style vortec heads on my 1989 silverado 350? or is it just a direct replacement? and also anyone have any idea how much horsepower i would gain from this? thanks

  1. Your best bet is to have your heads reworked, the 500 bucks you will spend on parts and labor for bigger valves, milling the heads .015-.030" and gasket match port work would give you better preformance than vortec heads. Milling the heads alone is worth at least 30-40 hp(adds compression) are you still running the stock TBI setup?


  2. Won't work without the vortec fuel injection system and intake manifold. Most likely would be a power LOSS.
