Converting video files?

I have some holiday video files I want to edit and put onto a DVD. The camcorder is JVC but I don't like the programme. I've saved the files onto my laptop but Windows Movie Maker doesn't recognise them. They are MOV files. How can I convert them into something recognisable so as to edit them? Thanks.

Do a seach on Yahoo Search for video convertors, Movie Maker will accept avi or wmv files so just look for an mov to avi convertor
